Values Through Behaviours
“Core values are the organization’s essential and enduring tenets, not to be compromised for financial or short-term expediency.” Core values, whether for an individual or an organization, exist to guide the decisions we make, priorities we have, and directions we take."
James Collins and Jerry Porras; Built To Last - Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.
How do effective leaders make sure that core values become more than just a slogan?
Effective leaders know they must model the behavior they seek from others first. When a leader fails to act in accordance with the stated values of the organisation, their staff will view their actions as hypocritical. When word and deeds do not align the underlying message becomes, “Do as I say, not as I do.”
The purpose of any organisations' attempt to align its values to vision, is built upon the espoused beliefs or ideals of the company and an acceptable framework of behaviour. This program will evaluate current behaviour against established values and highlight where improvements can occur. The process of any intervention is to encourage the ongoing application of a values and their associated behaviours on a day-to-day basis, across and including, all internal and external stakeholder relationships.
